Diversity and inclusion are no longer \u201cnice to haves\u201d or buzzwords in a corporate values deck. They\u2019re essential to how teams perform, collaborate and deliver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Kirsty Jennings, Senior Recruitment Consultant at NW People, explains, this shift is practical and necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt used to be seen as doing the right thing. But diversity actually provides a more open view of your customers and your market. It\u2019s about real people, real skills and real opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why diversity matters in the workplace<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a strong and consistent link between workplace diversity and organisational performance. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity wins: How inclusion matters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams are 25% more likely to financially outperform those in the bottom quartile. The same study found that companies with the highest levels of ethnic and cultural diversity at leadership level are 36% more likely to achieve above-average profitability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A diverse workforce means diverse perspectives and diverse ways of seeing, interpreting and solving problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverybody thinks a little bit differently,\u201d Kirsty says. \u201cWhere you\u2019re brought up, how you\u2019re brought up, your background \u2013 it all contributes to how you approach challenges. When you bring those different perspectives and ways of thinking together, innovation thrives.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is especially important in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwpeople.com.au\/professional-services\/the-future-of-work-in-professional-services-trends-insights-for-2025\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professional services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> workforce, where client relationships and problem-solving benefit directly from varied perspectives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diversity improves communication and strengthens team engagement. People show up more confidently when they feel represented and understood, and that leads to meaningful contributions and stronger outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inclusion: Where diversity becomes performance<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiring people from different backgrounds is only the starting point. Inclusion is what determines whether diversity translates into real value in the workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pdf4pro.com\/view\/the-diversity-and-inclusion-revolution-deloitte-613569.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deloitte\u2019s research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into high-performing teams found that diversity of thinking can increase innovation by around 20% and reduce risk by up to 30%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not because organisations with more diversity are louder or more performative about their values. It\u2019s because people participate more fully when they feel safe, respected and genuinely included.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also see these benefits across gender diversity in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwpeople.com.au\/employers\/professional-services\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">professional services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where more balanced leadership teams are consistently linked to stronger financial and organisational outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInclusion should just look like a normal workday,\u201d Kirsty says. \u201cEverybody having a healthy conversation, everyone feeling like their voice matters. We\u2019re not there yet across every workplace, but that\u2019s the goal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour leaders need to believe it, live it, breathe it,\u201d Kirsty says. \u201cIt has to be driven from the top down so it becomes natural for everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overcoming the real barriers to inclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many organisations want to create inclusive workplaces but are unsure where to start. The first step is recognising that traditional recruitment processes often unintentionally exclude people, especially those who may not have had the same access to education, digital tools or corporate work environments. Removing barriers is ultimately about equity in employment and ensuring people have fair access to work, support and progression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirsty has seen firsthand how small shifts can open doors that were previously closed.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI used to go into the community with laptops and help candidates apply and do their assessments because not everyone has had the same access to technology. That doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t do the job. It means we need to change the way we recruit.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach reflects a deeper principle: you can\u2019t design inclusion from a distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you want to increase Indigenous participation, go spend time in the community. If you want to support people with disability into work, go speak to disability providers. You\u2019ve got to really understand.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change doesn\u2019t start with policy. They grow. They contribute.
